In the wake of the Brett Favre injury reporting fine that was levied on the Jets, one he remarked was very unfair, there is another team in hot water for its handling of an injured player.Former Tennessee wide receiver David Givens is suing the team for $25 million, in an allegation that states that medical information was withheld from him and that he was allowed to play despite a medical opinion that his knee wouldn’t hold up for a full NFL Betting season.
Givens filed a lawsuit and claims that a doctor discovered that there was something wrong with his knee during a physical in March 2006. This was around the same time his contract was being negotiated and he claims the examining doctor told team officials he “may need surgery at some point” and “may not be able to make a full 16-game season,” according to the suit.
Givens is claiming that he wasn’t informed about the issue and that the team urged him keep playing. But in Week 10 of that season, he blew out his knee against the Ravens. An X-ray determined that the “previously known lesion and defect in his knee had crumbled,” according to the lawsuit. After multiple surgeries he has been unable to return to action.
The lawsuit claims that, “The decision was made by the Titans management, coaching and medical staffs to risk serious injury and aggravation to a pre-existing condition without so much as consulting or discussing that situation with David Givens”.If these allegations are true, it appears that Givens will be entitled to some financial compensation as this injury ultimately ended his career.This could also open a large can or worms as you have to assume that many players have suffered similar fates over the years.
