The Washington Redskins
This weekend my family and I went to a pre-season NFL football game. The teams playing were the Washington Redskins, my favorite team, and the New England Patriots, my son-in-laws favorite team. After seeing the Bucket List movie with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman I decided that it would be fun to start my own bucket list. I now had my last summer trip to Tangier Island and this summers concert, going to see Paul McCartney and my latest addition would be going to see The Washington Redskins.
I started to be fan of the Redskins when my Mom said that she liked them because they used to come into the restaurant where she worked as a waitress years ago and she told me that they were really nice. I know the players have changed but my support of the team never has.
I am not real sports savy but I’m learning and my husband is a fan of the Dallas Cowboys so it’s a lot of fun at my house game time and when our son-in-law told us that his team, The Patriots, was playing mine so I was in.
We headed to Maryland the and I stuffed my Portis jersey in my suitcase. We stayed in a nice motel and prepared for the evenings game. As we walked into the lobby things just felt a little different. Classy dressed, muscular men walked by us I figured it must be a health spa convention or something. If it wouldn’t have been for my son-in-law I wouldn’t have even realized that my team was staying here! The Washington Redskins. We all went to put our luggage in our rooms with Redskins walking by us pointed out to me by husband and son-in-law. I then went to put my Portis jersey in my purse and waited with the rest of the family in the lobby.
I realized that I didn’t even know the names of a lot of the members of my team or even what they looked like. I was clueless. I definately knew one thing for sure I would go home and learn the players, their names, and become more educated about football.
There wasn’t a lot of traffic in the motel so it was really fun seeing the Redskins walking by. After a little discreet gazing at my team members my son-in-law suddenly pointed out one of the guys. He told me the handsome guy coming out of the elevator whose name I had on my jersey in my purse, was Clinton Portis. I don’t know if I lost nerve or just figured Mr. Portis needed his privacy, it was probably a little of both but I didn’t go up to him and ask for an autograph.
That afternoon was so much fun for us and couldn’t have worked out any better. As the afternoon progressed my kids, husband, and I were in the elevator with some of the players and they seemed like really nice guys. In the end my team left in their buses with a police escort and sirens going. Afterall, they had a game to go to and we had a game to watch.
My family and I later headed to the same location, Fed Ex, stadium, I was proudly wearing my Portis jersey and watched The Washington Redskins play a really good game.
About the Author
I am a want to be writer. I took a course in writing children’s books years ago and loved it. The problem is giving myself a push to write on a regular basis. When it’s up to par it feels like writing comes together like a puzzle but when I’m not in the mood it shows in my writing.
